HEATER NOT WORKING EFFECTIVELY OR ENGINE TAKES TOO LONG TO WARM-UP

APPLICABLE MODELS

All 1995-98 Protege.

DESCRIPTION

The heater does not work efficiently or engine takes a long time to warm-up. This could be caused by a thermostat that is stuck open.

Customers complaining of this subject should have their vehicle inspected, and if necessary, use the following repair procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Verify the concern.
2. Connect the NGS tester and make sure the ECT is less than 170o F before proceeding.
3. Start engine and run at idle until cooling fan begins to operate.
4. Remove cooling fan relay, B4-01, from inside the main fuse box as shown below

5. Using a 14 AWG wire or larger, jump the B/R to the Y terminals of the relay socket as shown. This will cause the cooling fan to run continuously
6. Run the engine at idle for 10 minutes and monitor the ECT temperature. See illustration below

7. Verify the repair.
