F024/96 ENGINE SPEED DOES NOT
RETURN TO IDLE IDLE SPEED ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE
Note: This bulletin contains revised sections. Please update
your records accordingly.
APPLICABLE MODELS
1997 Protege with a Z5 engine, manual transaxle and a VIN of
JM1BC****V0111118 and lower.
DESCRIPTION
Idle speed may not be achieved after increasing the rpm to 3000
(with no load) then releasing the accelerator.
This may be caused by the logic in the powertrain control module
(PCM). PCM logic has been changed to prevent this concern.
Customers complaining of this concern should have the vehicle
inspected and if necessary, repaired according to this bulletin.
NOTE:
Service personnel should refer to this procedure for adjusting the idle
speed on this model. Service Managers are requested to place a copy of
this bulletin into section F of the workshop manual .
ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE
- Start and warm the engine to normal operating temperature.
- Shift the transaxle to neutral.
- Turn of all electrical loads:
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
NOTE:
In order to set the idle speed correctly, the negative battery cable
must be disconnected.
- Allow cooling fan to stop rotation if operating.
- Connect the NGS tester to data link connector 2 and select
- "Generic OBDII Functions, then "CONT"
- FREEZE FRAME PID/DATA MONITOR and RECORD function.
- Select ENGINE RPM on the NGS display.
- Connect the SST (System Selector) to the data link connector.
- Set switch "A" to position "1."
- Set the test switch to "SELF TEST."
- Adjust the idle speed to 700 rpm by turning the air adjust screw.
NOTE:
Do not set the idle speed using the vehicle's tachometer.
- Disconnect the SST (System Selector) and reconnect the negative
battery cable.
- If DTC P1633 is stored in memory, erase the code.
NOTE:
This DTC can be ignored when it is set in the idle setting.
- Disconnect the NGS tester.
- Operate the engine above 3000 rpm with and without electrical
loads.
- If the rpm returns to normal after racing the engine (with
electrical loads on and off), the concern is eliminated.
- If the engine does not return to idle, contact your
Major Assemblies Service Hotline (MASH).
