F025/96 MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL) DTC P0440 AND FUEL FILLER CAP INSTALLATION

DESCRIPTION

The following conditions may cause the MIL light to illuminate due to the current OBDII standards which sense evaporative leaks.

• Fuel cap not installed.
• Fuel cap not tightened.
• Non OEM fuel cap.

Customers complaining of MIL illumination should have the vehicle inspected for DTC P0440 and the above fuel cap malfunctions.

Service Managers and Advisors should inform customers to:

1. Confirm the fuel cap is installed after refueling.
2. Turn the cap clockwise until a click is heard.
3. If the cap is lost, replace it with only genuine Mazda parts.
