MIL ILLUMINATION WITH DTC P0505 HIGH IDLE

NOTE: This bulletin replaces F024/96. Please update your records accordingly.

APPLICABLE MODELS

1997 Protege with a Z5 engine and a VIN of JM1BCV0145883 and lower.

DESCRIPTION

High idle speed and DTC P0505 may be present in some vehicles. This concern may be caused by the logic in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The PCM logic has been changed to prevent this problem.

Customers complaining of this concern should have the vehicle inspected and if necessary, repaired according to this bulletin.

NOTE: Service personnel should refer to this procedure for adjusting the idle speed on this model. Service managers are requested to place a copy of this bulletin into section F of the workshop manual.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Start and warm the engine up to normal operating temperature.

2. Shift to neutral (MTX) or P (ATX).

3. Turn off all accessories.

4. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

5. Connect the NGS tester to data link connector number 2 (under dash) and select:

• Generic OBDII Functions, then CONT ;

• FREEZE FRAME PID/DATA MONITOR and RECORD function

• ENGINE RPM on the NGS display

6. Connect the SST (System Selector - 49 B019-9AO) to the data link connector (under hood).

7. Set switch A to position 1

8. Set the test switch to SELF TEST. ;

9. Adjust base idle speed to 550 RPM (MTX) or 650 RPM (ATX) by turning the air adjusting screw.

NOTE: Do not set the idle speed using the vehicles tachometer.

10. Disconnect System Selector.

11. Connect the negative battery cable.

12. Retrieve any DTCs stored in continuous memory.

NOTE: If DTC P1633 is stored in memory, erase the code. DTC P1633 can be ignored when it is set during idle setting.

13. Operate the engine above 3000 RPM without any electrical loads (i.e. headlights, defogger etc.).

• If the engine speed returns to normal after racing the engine (loads OFF and ON), return the vehicle to the customer.

• If the engine speed does not return to normal, contact the Technical Hotline for assistance.
