1997-98 Protege LIGHT THROTTLE 1-2 UPSHIFT SHOCK

1997-98 Protege

Under light throttle, a shift shock may occur late in the 1-2 upshift. This condition is caused by excessive pressures being applied to the 2-4 brake band servo piston late in the 2-4 brake band application.

Customers complaining of this concern should have the vehicle repaired using the following procedure.

1. Verify customer complaint by testing the vehicle under the following conditions.

  1. With a constant throttle opening of 1/8 - 1/4, shift shock occurs at the end of the 1-2 upshift.

    OR

  2. When releasing the accelerator pedal from a 1/8 - 1/4 open throttle, shift shock occurs at the end of the 1-2 upshift.

    • If shift shock occurs, during conditions A or B, proceed to STEP 2.

    • If no shift shock is present, refer to the Workshop Manual (section K) for further diagnostics.

NOTE: If this REPAIR PROCEDURE is performed on vehicles that do not meet conditions A or B, shift shock may occur during the beginning of the 1-2 upshift.

2. Replace the original large and small 1-2 accumulator springs with the single replacement spring as shown. Refer to Workshop Manual.
3. After accumulator spring replacement. follow the procedures listed below to confirm that the O-ring in accumulator stopper is not leaking.
  1. Set the parking brake firmly, then start the engine.

  2. Shift the transmission into SECOND at idle.

  3. Test the vehicle under these conditions for several minutes, then place transmission back into PARK and then check for ATF leakage at the 1-2 accumulator stopper. If leakage is found replace the stopper O-ring.

4. Verify repair.
