WHINING NOISE FROM REAR WHEEL HUB BEARING

APPLICABLE MODELS/VINS

1996 Protege vehicles with a VIN of JM1BB14**T0326198 and lower.

DESCRIPTION

A whining noise (similar to transaxle or final gear noise) may be heard from the rear of the vehicle. This noise:

The noise is caused by improper machining on the inner and outer races of the rear wheel hub bearing. Customers complaining of this noise, should have the vehicle inspected and if necessary, the rear wheel hub replaced.

NOTE: Two vendors (KOYO SEIKO and NTN) supply rear wheel hub bearings for this model. ONLY THOSE BEARINGS SUPPLIED BY KOYO SEIKO ARE INVOLVED IN THIS REPAIR.

REPAIR PROCEDURES

1. Verify the complaint.
2. Remove the rear wheels, drums (or disc plates) (both sides).
3. Check the rear hubs for identification. Refer to Fig. 1.
