For 2004-2007 Mazda3 and 2006-2007 Mazda5 vehicles, there are many
rear
brake pad part numbers listed. The difference between pads
is the
friction material and mounting spring orientation. The pads
are inter-
changeable. Use the following information as a guide to
select pads.
FRICTION
MATERIAL
The type of material used is specific to the first 4 characters in
the
part number. They are as
follows:
*Old Type - BPYK - Material used from initial Mazda3 production
until
11/16/2005.
*New Type - C2Y3 and B3YP - Updated friction material designed
to
address squeak noise in cold conditions during initial brake
application.
MOUNTING
SPRING
The inner brake pad of each rear wheel has a spring to prevent the
pad
from rattling. Spring design varies with the pad set as
shown below.
TYPE A and TYPE B brake pads are
interchangeable.
interchangeable.
TYPE A MOUNTING SPRING (OLD
STYLE)
Identical springs on each side and a spring running along the
bottom on
the inner pad backing. Identical springs clip onto caliper
piston and
the bottom spring applies pressure on the piston to prevent
rattle.
Outer pad is installed on caliper support, inner pad is installed
on
caliper.

TYPE B MOUNTING SPRING (NEW
STYLE)
