Symptom and Conditions

IDS software level 45 and later may not automatically ID a 97/98MY     
Protege. A manual vehicle ID is needed to start a session and enable   
all the correct diagnostic functions available in the IDS.             

Repair Procedure

From the IDS start screen Choose                                       
Manual Vehicle Entry, then click on the blue confirmation tick.        
A Information Screen will appear, press the blue tick to continue.     
A list of possible vehicles will appear, choose MAZDA, PROTEGE, then the
engine and transmission application. depending on which engine is      
selected a model year pop up window may appear.  After the model year is
selected a transmisson selection pop up window will appear.

Auto Shift Manual ASM  IS NOT A North American option. CHOOSE ONLY AUTOMATIC OR MANUAL!!!! 

ONCE ALL THE PROPER SELECTIONS HAVE BEEN MADE A VEHICLE    
SPECIFICATION SCREEN WILL APPEAR, IF IT IS CORRECT CHECK THE"YES"BUTTON
AND A SESSION WILL START. IF THE VEHICLE IS INCORRECT CHECK THE "NO"   
BUTTON AND THE PCM ID SCREEN WILL APPEAR WHCIH WILL ALLOW A TEAR TAG OR
PART NUMBER TO BE USED TO ESTABLISH A SESSION.
