Oil filter designs for LF and L3 engines are different and require specific oil filter wrenches for servicing. 2.0L LF engines use a spin-on type oil filter. 2.3L L3 engines use a cartridge type oil filter with a plastic cap.

Repair Procedure

The spin-on type filter on the LF engine may be removed using the Oil Filter Wrench (AKS73150) or equivalent. When installed use the Oil Filter Wrench (AKS73150) to tighten the filter to specification. Be sure to clean the mating service and apply clean oil to the new filter O-ring before installation. Refer to Workshop Manual for oil filter torque specification.

For the cartridge type filter, after removing the oil filter drain plug as described in the Workshop Manual, the cartridge type filter cover MUST be removed using the Oil Filter Wrench (AKS75140) specifically designed for the 2.3L L3 engine. When installed the Oil Filter Wrench (AKS75140) MUST BE USED to tighten the filter cover to specification. Be sure to use the new O-rings for the filter cover and drain plug and apply clean oil to the O-rings before installation. If a strap wrench or channel locks are used to remove and install the filter cover, damage to the filter cover may occur causing an oil leak resulting in possible engine damage up to failure. Refer to Workshop Manual for oil filter cover and drain plug torque specifications.

Though these tools look similar, they cannot be interchanged. Forcing the tools on the filter(s) will cause damage to the tool and the filter.
