STIFF OPERATION OF THE REAR DOOR CHILD SAFETY LOCK

APPLICABLE MODELS/VINS

All 1995 Protege vehicles with a VIN of JM1BA****S0122206 and lower.

DESCRIPTION

The rear door child safety lock operation may be stiff. This may be caused by a bend in the locking mechanism set plate. To prevent this concern, the set plate configuration has changed to increase rigidity.

If a customer complains of any of the following, refer to the repair procedures in this bulletin.

NOTE: It is not necessary to replace the locating mechanism to correct this concern. Service Personnel should insure customers are familiar with the child lock functions.

REPAIR PROCEDURES

1. Confirm the complaint.
2. Remove the door trim.
3. Confirm that the door lock and door handle linkage are properly attached.
4. Disconnect the linkage from the door handle and remove the door lock assembly.
5. Check the position of the set plate.
6. Remove the outer plastic cover from the lock mechanism.
7. Remove the child safety lock mechanism. Refer to Fig. 1.

8. Straighten the set plate. Refer to Fig. 2.

9. Assemble the child safety lock mechanism.
10. Install outer plastic cover.
11. Install lock assembly.
12. Attach the linkage to handle.
13. Confirm proper operation.
