S025/98 1996-98 Protege - DOOR MIRROR CRACKS IN FREEZING TEMPERATURES (Manual Type)

APPLICABLE MODELS

All 1996-98 Proteges with manual door mirrors.

DESCRIPTION

Manual door mirror(s) cracks in freezing temperatures. This is caused when trapped water between the mirror and mirror holder freezes and expands, pushing the mirror outward. This results in cracks in the center portion of the mirror.

NOTE: Service parts (mirror assemblies) have not been modified to prevent this concern.

Customers complaining of this concern should have their vehicle repaired according to the following procedure to ensure that this condition does not reoccur.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

  1. Verify customer complaint.

  2. Heat the mirror glass and mirror holder enough to make it pliable.

    WARNING: Protective hand and eye wear should be worn.

    CAUTION: Excessive heat will melt the mirror holder.

  3. Insert a suitable tool between the mirror glass and the mirror holder.

  4. While applying a slight amount of pressure with the tool, heat the mirror glass until it becomes loose.

    CAUTION: Only warm mirror glass enough to free it from the holder, excessive heat will melt the holder.

  5. Allow mirror holder to cool then remove the remaining adhesive.

  6. Insert a suitable protector between the mirror holder and the mirror housing.

  7. Drill two 5mm holes in the mirror holder in the locations shown.

  8. Widen holes with a 7mm drill bit.

  9. Remove debris around the front and back of the holes.

  10. Slightly warm the mirror holder and the mirror glass.

    NOTE: Remove any oil that is present on the mirror holder.

  11. Install new mirror glass.

  12. Verify repair.
