The tachometer needle may become stuck on the wrong side of the stopper pin. If a customer complains of this concern, inspect the vehicle and if necessary, repair according to this bulletin.
NOTE:
Fig. 1
Explain to the customer that revving the engine to a high RPM prior to engine shut off is unnecessary.
Tachometer replacement is not necessary for this repair.
1. Verify the concern.
2. Verify that the ROOM fuse is installed.
3. Start the engine and increase RPM to approximately 5500 rpm or until the needle begins to move away from the stopper pin (counter-clockwise).
4. Decrease the engine speed to idle and turn ignition off.
5. Verify that the needle moves back to zero.
NOTE: Verify that the needle moves back to zero.
NOTE: Take care not to damage the needle or soil the meter surface.
The tach needle will not return to zero if the engine is turned off at 4000 rpm or higher when the ROOM fuse is not installed. Refer to the illustration above. The tach needle will continue to rotate clockwise until it rests on the wrong side of the stopper pin.
When the ignition is turned off at a high RPM (past mid-range), the force moving the tach needle clockwise becomes greater than the force returning it to zero. When restarting the engine, the tach needle moves to the wrong side of the stopper pin. Refer to the illustration above.
NOTE: This situation can occur even when the ROOM fuse is installed.
