A/C REFRIGERANT CHARGING

APPLICABLE MODELS

'95-97 Protege

DESCRIPTION

Protege A/C compressors can be damaged if the freon (R134A) is charged through the low side fitting. A large amount of liquid freon (R134A) can fill the compressor and cause a hydro locking concern.

REFRIGERANT CHARGING PROCEDURE

WARNING: DO NOT OPEN THE HIGH PRESSURE SIDE VALVE WHILE THE ENGINE AND A/C ARE RUNNING. RUNNING THE ENGINE WITH THE HIGH-PRESSURE SIDE VALVE OPEN IS DANGEROUS. PRESSURE WITHIN THE REFRIGERANT CANISTERS COULD INCREASE AND CAUSE THE CANISTERS TO EXPLODE, SCATTERING METAL FRAGMENTS AND LIQUID REFRIGERANT THAT CAN SERIOUSLY INJURE YOU.

1. Charge refrigerant only through the high pressure charge port.
2. Complete charging by pulling any remaining refrigerant through the low side, with the compressor operating.
3. Evacuation of the system can be through both the low and high pressure ports, but the low charge port must be disconnected or shut off prior to refrigerant charging.
