NOISE FROM BLOWER MOTOR DUE TO FOREIGN SUBSTANCE

APPLICABLE MODELS

'95-'97 Protege with VIN of JM1BC14**V0131460 and lower

'93-'97 626/MX-6 with VIN of IYVGE****V5642239 and lower produced before the modification of February 18, 1997

DESCRIPTION

The blower motor may make contact with foreign substance during operation, and an unusual noise is heard. Some customers may also complain that the front passenger side carpet (foot well area) is damp.

Foreign substance enters the blower motor due to any of the following conditions.

  1. Dead leaves enter the blower motor housing through the clearance between the cowl grille and the body, or through the wiper installation holes or other openings in the grille.

  2. The felt of the dash board insulator appears in the blower unit air inlet, and falls into the blower unit housing.

  3. During production, pieces of felt from the dash board insulator fall into the blower motor housing.

  4. During production, the passenger-side air bag module harness is temporarily fixed with paper tape. Tape residue may enter the blower motor housing.

The foreign substance may enter the cooling unit from the blower motor, and clog the cooling unit drain. Due to clogging, water can not be drained and overflows into the passenger compartment.

Production changes now prevent felt and tape particles from entering the blower motor assembly. In addition, foam is added to the back of the cowl (Protege and 626/MX-6) and wire netting over the blower motor inlet (Protege). Customers complaining of this problem should have the vehicle inspected and, repaired if necessary.
